Happy New Year!

Please ring in 2013 safely! If you choose to go out and enjoy a drink, make arrangements for a designated driver!

In 17 states, AAA's Tipsy Tow service is available. This is available statewide in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Texas, and Utah. Also available in select locations in Tennessee (West and Middle), Hawaii (Islands of Kaui, Maui, and Oahu), Montana (Missoula, Bozeman, Helena, and Billings), Oklahoma (Metro Tulsa, Metro Oklahoma City, Shawnee, Bartlesville, Enid, Muskogee, and Lawton), South Dakota (Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Mitchell, and Yankton), Virginia (Tidewater area only- Greater Hampton Roads including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Yorktown, and Williamsburg), New Jersey (Morris, Essex, and Union counties), and Merrimack Valley (wherever that is??). Call 1-800-222-4357 for a ride in these areas. Some of the tow services will take you AND your vehicle to your destination within the specified area, others will only take passengers. Some places will charge you for the ride, others make New Year's Eve fares free. Call ahead to find out!

If you don't fall into one of these areas, check AAA's Sober Ride list for information on safe ways home tonight. This list is from the National High Way Traffic Safety Administration and it includes phone numbers, fares, and stipulations for their Sober Rides.

Don't be stupid. It isn't just your life that is in jeopardy when you choose to drink and then drive. Other people can be hurt by your poor choices. My father is severely disabled due to being hit by a drunk driver when he was just 19 years old and has suffered through years of debilitating pain and degenerating nerves because of one man's stupid choice. Even worse, the driver of my dad's car (who was sober) died in that wreck, leaving behind a lot of grieving family.

Even tipsy driving is drunk driving. Don't do it. Don't get into a vehicle with someone that has been drinking. Be safe and we'll see you in 2013!

How I Rang in the New Year

Now that the 1st is done and over, I thought I'd share my eventful New Years Day. Normally, I wouldn't care but yesterday was interesting to say the least.

So... the ball dropped and 2012 rang in with gun shots right by our house! I understand that some people still like to ring in the new year with shooting a gun into the air. I am not against gun ownership, as I own one myself and renew a concealed carry permit every year. But, shooting a gun into the air is stupid. Even objects in motion (i.e. bullets) are subject to gravity. The damn things come down somewhere. So my father and I were outside walking the puppies when we heard at least two different kinds of guns shooting and stupid boys whooping in the cemetery next door. Dad decided to be nosy and try to spot the guys while I called the police.

Mind, I didn't call 911. I didn't know if anyone was in immediate danger so I prefer not to call the emergency line just to complain about idiotic people. So I told the dispatcher what was happening. After a minute or so, the guys noticed my Dad standing in the driveway staring into the cemetery. One of them got in his car and then pulled into our driveway to have a staring competition with my Dad. I mentioned that we are responsible gun owners right? Yeah, the guy left when he realized my Dad had a small arsenal of shotguns 3 feet behind him. Daddy is a hunter after all. The sheriff showed up just a couple minutes after the other car went the opposite direction.

Yeah, so I rang in the new year by calling the police. How redneck is that? haha I wish the police would have caught at least one of them. There are a lot of children in this neighborhood. I can name 8 kids that live in adjacent properties around my house, not counting my little sisters. Pure stupidity. Also, they woke up every dog for at least a mile radius who then barked for the next hour. Ugh. I woke up at 8am and the rest of the day was pretty uneventful. Just my 12am was crazy. I honestly planned to go to bed around 11:30 pm but was distracted by a puzzle. haha

How did you ring in the new year? Did you go out? Stay in? Go to bed before midnight?

Love is love, no matter the back story. <3 DS

Friday Five: Favorite 2011 Memories

I hope everyone is enjoying the last Friday of 2011. If you are getting ready to party tomorrow night, please remember to stay safe and keep it all in moderation. If you can't remember it, then how can it be any fun later on? Yeah yeah. Speaking of memory, that leads me to today's Friday Five. My favorite memories of 2011!

1. My brother got married in September! Yeah! Go bro! Maybe my sister-in-law can muzzle him and keep him grounded. :)

2. I finally "officially" moved back to Ohio in August. I live in the south since 2003. It was time to come home for a while.

3. I got my first e-reader in October. I have since downloaded about 600 free books and games. I intend to read them all at some point!

These last two were harder to come up with...

4. Occupy events started in September. I'm sad that it has come to demonstrations and civil disobedience, but I am very happy to keep the memory of Americans finally waking up in my mind.

5. Gay marriage legalized in New York in July. I am very, very happy that my friends in New York are legally entitled to marry their partners, but I really hate that it has come to be court cases and such over the issue. Up until 1996, there was no "definition" of marriage. Why do we need one now? The neighbor's marriage has no merit on someone else's. So yes, just like in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010, I am happy about the legalization, but I am still disappointed that people cannot see beyond their own egos to get over themselves and mind their own business.

Here is to a very Happy New Years to you. Stay safe. Have fun. Ring in the new year surrounded by those you love!
