You should have read up on character development by now. Try to apply what you learned to the main character you have in mind. Doing such writing exercises now will save you some serious heartache later on, should you decide you hate your main character. Write up a biography and employ some of the techniques you learned. You should know your main character inside and out so give it good thought. 95% of what you write will probably never see the light of day in your novel, but it will help you develop your character's voice and mannerisms that should be in the novel.
